Blog 13: Professional Web Presence

One of the main projects in EME 2040, is creating a professional web presence. This is an essential tool that can be used throughout your school career and in the business world. The purpose of a professional web presence is to give people a view of you professionally. They can look at your myspace and facebook, but they will only get a personal view and possibly information that you wouldn’t want them to see. The professional web presence allows you to create a website designed to properly represent you.

In the field of public relations, having a personal web presence is crucial. Every day you may be working with different clients. This allows them the opportunity to get to know you and decide whether they want to work with you or not. Having an impressive site, will more than likely get them to choose you. On the flip side, having an unorganized, scattered website may lose their interest in you and you may end up losing a job.

This link will take you to my web presence. I believe that when I offer this site to potential employers they will be impressed before they even meet me. This site represents both a personal and professional side and is a nice balance. In the future I will be able to add things with more experiences under my belt.

Blog 12: Gaming used for teaching and learning

With the expansion of technology and its use in both a personal and business world, gaming has become very important. Online games allow people to escape from reality and not have to worry about their real world. Games such as Second Life, allow users to create an alternative life where they can create their own image and name. Although most gaming is used as entertainment, there have been instances where gaming has taken over people’s lives. On an NCIS episode, they had a petty officer who killed someone and planned on blowing up the ship because they thought they were truly playing the game.

Gaming can be used in public relations in order to reach a certain audience. If something may be relevant and can advertise during online game sessions or send subliminal messages within games. Interactive games could be a great way to get kids to learn, for example, all of the different toys they sell at Leap Frog and other toy companies like them.

The above video is a trailer for Second Life. Second Life is a virtual game that allows users to create an alternative world where they can interact with other users. This is a game where if you wanted to advertise and product place, there are many opportunities.

Blog 11: Distance Education and Virtual Learning

Distance education and virtual learning allows students and teachers to learn regardless of location. Students can access lectures and materials online, without having to attend class and sit in a classroom. This can be beneficial to many different people. Depending on time schedule, having distance and online education can allow users the flexibility of time when doing online courses. At the same time, users can also become not benefit by common mistakes. Those include procrastination because there is not a set time that lessons have to be viewed, technical difficulties such as viruses or shifty internet connections, or the risk of false accreditation.

In the public relations field, distance education can be used if someone has a job but wants to extend their education and does not have time to enroll at a university. There are also many seminars and workshops that can be offered online if someone does not have the time to attend, but would like to learn the skills taught. Another great use for distance education is the use for sailors in the Navy. Being an officer, I will have men and women in my chain of command that should pursue a degree. Distance education would give them the opportunity to take classes and not have deployments affect their learning.

UF Distance Education

This website shows courses and degrees that people can take online. Many universities, like the University of Florida, offer online courses and degrees. They have the same requirement as those that are sit down in a classroom, only they are offered online. This can help students who may not live in Florida, but want to take classes at the University of Florida, which has a good reputation.

Blog 10: Open Source Software ****NEW BLOGS

Open source software allows users to collaborate to make a better product. The programs allows access to the public, then users can work together to create software. After the end result has been met, the program is accessible per the agreement of the copyright. Most open source software are free to the public, such as Open Office, an open source program that is similar to Microsoft Office.

Open source software can be useful in the field of public relations because if there are enough people who work on a certain program, there may be a domain that creates a program for professionals to use. This program may make areas of public relations easier to access or be a more effective way of reaching a target audience.

Open Office

The example for open source software is Open Office. Open Office is a free program that is like Microsoft Office. It allows you to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and create databases for free, unlike Microsoft Office. This can be a very useful tool for someone who is on a budget and can’t afford the expensive software, like Microsoft.

Blog 9: Concept Maps

Concept maps are a great way to organize thoughts and ideas. Websites such as bubbl.us, Gliffy and mywebspiration.net are great tools to use to create concept maps. These programs allow people to separate ideas, link them, and move them around in a fashion that is easy to understand and see.

In Public Relations, when you are promoting something it is good to have a plan. By making concept maps using programs and websites like these, you are able to organize ideas and processes that you may have. You can also post them on the web to make them accessible to clients, colleagues or anyone who would need to know the information you are organizing.

Concept Map Video

This is a very simple example of how to make a concept map.

Blog 8: Google Documents aka Google Docs

Google documents are a great way to collaborate and revise work. Google docs are live documents that allow you to chose users that you want to be able to edit the document. Whether it is a word document or a spread sheet, those who are granted permission can edit the document and therefore eliminate the hassle of having to revise work and have many different copies of the same document. This not only saves time but also saves mistakes. Instead of having a bunch of documents to transfer revisions from, there is only one and the person who revised it has already changed what was wrong. Therefore if there was a mistake it would already be fixed and not overlooked.

In Public Relations, most of the work done is done as a group. Google docs can improve the group efficiency and efforts. They will also make it easier if someone is out of town on business, they can still play their role in the team.

Google Document Example

This is an example of a Google Doc that I can access anywhere there is internet.

Blog 7: Podcasts and sounds on the internet

Podcasts are digital sound files that allow someone to download a lecture or speaker of some sort. Other uses of itunes Garage Band or by mixing sounds from freesounds.com allow people to collaborate music without being near each other. They also allow the free use of their sounds and can create something different then intended, leading to innovative sounds.

Podcasts can be helpful in Public Relations because it is an easy way to promote a certain item. Podcasts can range from information people may need to know, funny segments that might catch the eye and spread faster among the viral world.

Funny Baseball Podcast

This is a funny podcast of baseball showing that podcasting can literally be done from anywhere.

Blog 6: Digital Storytelling ****BLOG 2

Digital storytelling is telling a story through animation. Using sites like animoto.com and goanimate.com, allow users to create stories and tell the story they want with a song or just plain animation. Some of the stories created can be purely representational and require the viewer to look for an inner meaning of some sort. Or some may be completely up front about the meaning and just be for entertainment purposes.

Digital storytelling can be used in Public Relations when trying to get a message out or promote something. In the Navy, it might become useful if I am trying to compile a series of pictures from a deployment or event to compile a clip that would entertain and serve a purpose to promote the unit.

Sammy the Dog

This example is a great way to view how we can use imovie to create a digital story. The story is about the Honeymuffins and getting a new dog.

Blog 5: Photoshop

Photoshop is a program that allows users to alter or create pictures. This is important because as a people we depend on visual literacy for many things. Whether it is recognizing a favorite McDonalds by the giant golden arches, or the sign for which bathroom to use, we as human being rely heavily on visual literacy. I was recently overseas and did not speak the language of the country so I relied heavily on depicting pictures to know where things were and what not.

The public relations field can use Photoshop and programs like it to create images for promotion. Some ideas would be if you had to create a new logo for a new company, banners or anything that a new design would be needed for. As for visual literacy, we can use the program to make images that people translate and can relate to, therefore remember. Recognition among people will make your product more known and would be better promotion.

I chose this tutorial because it goes step by step working in Photoshop and making a logo. This pertains a lot to me because working and dealing with promotions and such having tutorials and tools with Photoshop will come very useful.

Blog 4: Copyright (Extra Blog)

We have been taught from the time we first make a mistake to do something right, the difference between right and wrong, ethics. Copyright protects an author of an idea and product, from theft from sources who are not permitted to use them. Plagiarism is the taking of someone’s work and calling it your own. The copyright lasts for 70 years after the author’s death. After the death of an author, the copyright can be inherited by kin or given to someone else.

In every profession there are ethical standards and public relations specialists should be held to an even higher one because they are dealing with a company’s public image. So it is important to have a strong knowledge of what is ethical and what is not. The way I see it, you wouldn’t want to have something you worked really hard, physically or mentally, to be claimed by someone else so don’t do it to someone else.

I chose this video because it asked a few questions that I thought were interesting. Does copyright infringement lessen creativity? In the video he gives examples of people who have posted replies to their favorite songs, and their versions of copying their favorite artists. Yet when the mom of a 13-month-old child is asked to remove a You Tube video of him dancing to a song because she is violating the copyright of the song. I feel that this is really not an issue but a demonstration of how the law doesn’t necessarily help us.

Blog 3: Web 2.0 Technology

Everyone is talking about it! That’s right Web 2.0 which now makes the internet a more interactive place rather than just a source of information. Social networking sites, blogs, wikis, and plenty of other applications that impact the learning environment. Rather than meeting in groups to do assignments, groups can use websites such as wiggio.com to post and discuss topics. As mentioned in the assigned readings, Web 2.0 is taking internet to the next level and from just a read only format to a read-write format. Students can interact, making it more interesting for them to learn.

It is important to know this information and learn about the ways to use Web 2.0 because in the field of public relations, you have to understand what is going on around you. Also you can use programs as such to locate a target audience to promote different concepts, ideas and products. Using programs such as Facebook to create a “fan” page of your company, allowing you to promote and communicate with your public. They can interact with you, so it makes it more interesting for them and they are more prone to do it.

Web 2.o...oh yeah!

I feel that this video is a great representation of Web 2.0 because it is interacting with people. This video contains footage from a lot of different people saying what they like or dislike about Web 2.0. Before with the Web 1.0, there was more of a telling and explaining rather than an interaction when signing on to the web.

Blog 2: Mac vs. PC

The top two competing computers are Macs and PC’s. The commercials and advertisements have allowed each’s customers to identify with a group. “I’m a Mac,’ or “I’m a PC” are popular statements. Each computer platform and operating system works differently and has separate features that the other does not have. I personally have grown up using Windows and didn’t start hearing of people having Macs until I started college. Then when I used a Mac, I was completely lost because of the differences from a PC.

It is important to understand both operating systems, even if you are more comfortable with one more than the other. Either in the public relations field or military, you never know which operating system you will be given or told to use, so knowing both is beneficial to you.

How to use a Mac

I chose this video, because I thought it explained how to use a Mac pretty well. As I said earlier, I have only used Windows on a PC so using a Mac is a completely different place. I thought this was a good explanation of how to use a Mac.

Blog 1: Educational Technology

According to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, educational technology is defined as being, “the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and the evaluation of processes and resources for learning.” Over the years educational technology has gone from slides and radios, to computers with wireless internet and DVD with Blue Ray and high definition. Technology is changing the way students are learning material and even the military.

As a public relations major, understanding how educational technology impacts the community, students and those who use it, allows a way to understand our audience better and create better lines of communication. Better knowledge of how they learned something, what was available, what is the best way to sort of say, “be on their level” and know how to interact with them, would be ideal and the best way of doing your job as a public relations specialist. Also going into the military, knowledge of educational technology will help me to understand what my sailors and enlisted personnel are working with and find ways to help them.

VOA Special English Education Report

I chose this video, the VOA Special English Education Report, because I think it has a lot to do with the different advantages and applications of educational technology. The video mentions different factors that play into the amount of technology or type of technology including budgets and goals of teachers and schools. There are such devices such as the Smart Board that allows students to become involved with a n interactive white board. Other education professionals are integrating newer technology, such as I-pods and mobile phones, into the curriculum to make learning in the classroom more effective.
