Blog 13: Professional Web Presence

One of the main projects in EME 2040, is creating a professional web presence. This is an essential tool that can be used throughout your school career and in the business world. The purpose of a professional web presence is to give people a view of you professionally. They can look at your myspace and facebook, but they will only get a personal view and possibly information that you wouldn’t want them to see. The professional web presence allows you to create a website designed to properly represent you.

In the field of public relations, having a personal web presence is crucial. Every day you may be working with different clients. This allows them the opportunity to get to know you and decide whether they want to work with you or not. Having an impressive site, will more than likely get them to choose you. On the flip side, having an unorganized, scattered website may lose their interest in you and you may end up losing a job.

With the expansion of technology and its use in both a personal and business world, gaming has become very important. Online games allow people to escape from reality and not have to worry about their real world. Games such as Second Life, allow users to create an alternative life where they can create their own image and name. Although most gaming is used as entertainment, there have been instances where gaming has taken over people’s lives. On an NCIS episode, they had a petty officer who killed someone and planned on blowing up the ship because they thought they were truly playing the game.

Gaming can be used in public relations in order to reach a certain audience. If something may be relevant and can advertise during online game sessions or send subliminal messages within games. Interactive games could be a great way to get kids to learn, for example, all of the different toys they sell at Leap Frog and other toy companies like them.

There are also many seminars and workshops that can be offered online if someone does not have the time to attend, but would like to learn the skills taught. Another great use for distance education is the use for sailors in the Navy. Being an officer, I will have men and women in my chain of command that should pursue a degree.
